Using your board – PLEASE USE YOUR BOARD! You may really like your board, but while it is very pretty, and can be used as kitchen art; it is truly meant to be an intracule part of your daily food preparations. DON’T be afraid to actually use your board. Use it to Cut, Chop, Slice, Dice (Avoid Serrated Knives) … just be sure NOT to cross contaminate - meaning… make sure you're not switching back and forth between meats and vegetables without washing your board in between.
Cleaning your Board – Wash your board as much as you feel is necessary, just be sure to remember to use lukewarm water and mild soap and to towel dry immediately and allow it to air dry vertically. It is best not to use HOT water or strong soaps to clean your board, as they will degrade the condition of your boards finish. It may start to stain, cause your board to look faded and remove the protective finish from your board.
Refinishing Your Board – Over time you may notice that your board begins to develop some dry areas, maybe starts staining, especially if you have been cutting a lot of greens or use a lot of seasonings. If this is happening, it’s time to apply a new protective coating on your board. It is a TOTALLY normal for your boards finish to show wear over time. State 48 Wood Designs Board Butter has a little more beeswax in it to help extend the time between refinishes. You can find our board butter in our online store.
Final Notes – Knife cut marks on the board are completely normal. However, if you have a deeper gouge or something that looks like it may hold contaminates; that is an issue that needs to be addressed. Please contact us and we will help you to find a viable solution to your concern.
How To Refinish Your Board
When should you refinish your board? You should refinish your board when you start seeing dry areas or staining that is not being resolved during the normal washing of your board. This happens most often when you use your board for chopping greens. The green from the vegetables will begin to leave a stain on your board.
Before you apply a new finish, you need to Prep your board. Wash your board as thoroughly as possible with mild soap and warm water. Then allow board to dry COMPLETELY before the next the step. DON’T just wipe it down with a towel - let it air dry to eliminate all moisture. Then inspect your board, making sure there is no residual residue left over. If there is residue left on your board it will be trapped on the surface of your board. You don’t want to leave any dust or contaminates like that stuck under the layer of board butter that you are about to apply.
Now is the time to reapply your boards finish.
State 48 Wood Designs Board Butter is an unique blend of 100% Natural Beeswax and FDA/USDA Food Grade Mineral Oil. Using 100% Food Grade ingredients makes it completely safe to put on your board.
Apply an even coat across all sides / surfaces of your board. Allow your board to sit in room temperature space for several hours. Buff your board until board butter is fully rubbed into the wood.
